Club
Welcome to the West Wallsend Bluebells
Website. In 2010 the club will celebrate its 119th season making
it one of Australia ’s oldest running
football clubs.
The West Wallsend
Senior Football Club was established in 1891. In that season it was known as
West Wallsend Athletic Football Club and wore sky-blue shirts. In 1892 it
played its first competition match on 30th April against Adamstown Rosebuds at Johnston Park (Wembley). The match ended in a 2-2
draw and was celebrated with a banquet at the Johnston Hotel (Now Museum
Hotel). After failing to field a team during the mining strikes of
1895-96. The West Wallsend Senior Football Club re-nominated for the Northern
District British Football Association as the Bluebell’s in 1897 in their now
famous royal blue shirts.
Currently the club is a
member of the Northern NSW Football, and for the 2010 season will
participate in the Northern NSW NBN State Football League Competition. Last
season the Club finished sixth, four points away from the semi-final places in the NBN State
Football League. This season the club hopes to go one step better and qualify
for the semi-finals for the first time since 1995.
The club plays its home
games at Johnston Park , West Wallsend (nicknamed :Wembley) at the foot of Mt
Sugarloaf. The ground was named after the hotel adjacent, Johnston
’s Hotel (now the Museum Hotel) and the Bluebell’s have played all their
football here making it as old as the club. For the 2009 and 2010 seasons
the Bluebell's home ground will be called Varley Park thanks to a great
sponsorship deal with Varley Group.
The football season runs
usually starts in March, with the Grand Final in September each year.
